High-Profile Attendance Underscores Case Significance

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s attendance demonstrated support for Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the declared winner by INEC. The presence of Philip Shaibu, the former Edo State Deputy Governor who recently defected from the PDP to the APC, further highlighted the political stakes involved in this legal battle. Their combined attendance emphasizes the importance of the outcome of the tribunal’s decision to the APC government in Edo state.

Witness Testimony and Evidence Presentation

The PDP’s legal team presented its 16th witness, Haruna Ibrahim, a polling unit agent. While acknowledging the generally smooth conduct of the election, Ibrahim testified to observing irregularities, specifically instances of over-voting. He claimed to have duly reported these irregularities to INEC officials at the relevant polling unit. This testimony forms a crucial part of the PDP’s strategy to demonstrate flaws in the electoral process and necessitate the annulment of the election results.

Key Evidence: BVAS Machines and Data

The tribunal has previously admitted significant evidence, notably 148 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used during the election. These machines, presented by Anthony Itodo, a Senior Technical Officer in INEC’s ICT Department, are central to verifying the election’s procedural integrity. The BVAS data will play a pivotal role in assessing the validity of the results, particularly within those polling units where irregularities are alleged.

Conclusion

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal hearings are ongoing, with the PDP presenting evidence aiming to challenge the validity of the election results. The testimony of witnesses and the analysis of BVAS data will be crucial in determining the tribunal’s ultimate decision. The high-profile attendance and the presentation of key evidence highlight the significance of this case and its potential impact on the political landscape of Edo State. The final judgment will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the state’s governance and the political parties involved.
