MAHA Activists Accuse Trump Administration of Broken Promises

A growing faction of MAHA activists accuse the Trump administration of broken promises after releasing an official scorecard alleging that federal officials failed to deliver on over 85% of their commitments regarding food safety, corporate regulation, and environmental health. Prominent leaders from the “Make America Healthy Again” movement, including former key campaign strategists for Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., publicly criticized the White House, claiming that recent regulatory decisions cater to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries rather than protecting public health.

The scorecard, spearheaded by former Kennedy campaign adviser Tiffany Cianci along with former campaign fundraiser Dave Murphy and speechwriter Charles Eisenstein, evaluates the administration’s performance across key agricultural and environmental benchmarks. Activists highlighted recent executive decisions to expand the supply of the herbicide glyphosate and the approval of new synthetic pesticides as direct betrayals of the movement’s core mission. They also pointed to the hiring of corporate lobbyists within regulatory bodies and the loosening of drinking water limits for certain PFAS chemicals by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

While the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed voluntary measures for companies to phase out select food dyes, activists argue these actions fall far short of binding bans. “Glyphosate Girl” advocate Kelly Ryerson and other organizers noted that while many detrimental regulatory choices fall under agencies outside Kennedy’s direct control, such as the EPA and USDA, the lack of firm opposition from administration leaders leaves original supporters feeling deeply alienated ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Administration Response and Movement Fissures

In response to the scorecard, White House spokesperson Allison Schuster defended the administration’s record, emphasizing significant achievements under the MAHA banner. Schuster highlighted the complete overhaul of federal dietary guidelines to discourage ultra-processed foods, investments in regenerative agriculture, and ongoing efforts to reduce artificial ingredients in the national food supply as proof of progress. HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard added that Secretary Kennedy remains dedicated to science-backed, transparent reforms across all federal health departments.

Despite these assurances, experts note that the broad MAHA coalition, which brought together food safety advocates, environmentalists, organic farmers, and vaccine skeptics, is experiencing severe internal friction. While Kennedy succeeded in altering federal advisory panels on vaccines and updating nutritional guidance, core activists focused on toxic chemicals and food additives express growing frustration, with some warning that disappointed voters may choose to sit out upcoming elections altogether.

My View

The growing divide between MAHA activists and administration officials illustrates the difficult reality of converting a political campaign promise into actual federal policy.

Campaigning on sweeping promises, such as eliminating ultra-processed foods, banning widely used agricultural pesticides, or immediately overhauling federal health agencies, appeals to voters who are frustrated with corporate influence. However, once in office, federal leaders run into existing legal frameworks, statutory authority limits, complex agency rulemaking procedures, and heavy resistance from established industries.

When political movements promise rapid, structural overhauls without navigating the formal regulatory steps required to implement them, supporter disappointment is inevitable. True public health reform requires steady, legally sound policy work rather than relying solely on campaign slogans; it just won’t work, especially not with Trump.
