2023: What Nigeria needs
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

2023 general election politicking is now in full swing, despite the fact that the election is still over a year away. Like every election year in Nigeria, low key, the moneybag has begun making consultation about who to throw their support for during the election, while the hapless masses are looking for person with a magic wand to do messianic job of redeeming the nation.

The corollary to this article is about the matter of crowdfunding of a candidacy of former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi. He is viewed by many as one who possesses messianic tendency to cure many ills bedeviling the country.

It has now become a trend since the inception of this republic in 1999 that people only focus on candidate that promise to effect a change. Such politician go on campaign trail, speaking about the systems they will enable without debating the proposed methodology to be used to effect such change.

It was this same sentiment in 2015 that brought this current administration to power. Buhari played on the biases of the masses to end high level of corruption in government sectors, couple with inability of Jonathan’s administration to deal with the menace. People saw Buhari as a messiah that could uproot corruption totally among government circle with less focus on his plans to enable a working systems.

Voters in the coming election should endeavour to understand that instead of looking for a messiah, they should focus more in building sustainable systems, because right systems will ensure that the activities and processes continues automatically, whether the supposed messiah is present or not. It is onus on the voters to elect good people with good knowledge about how systems work, and not those with the highest amount of money to spend or messiahs who will falter when the going becomes tough. Look at the trouble we created for ourselves thinking Buhari was a Messiah. With systems in place, you can think of an autopilot system in aircraft.

However, some might argue and insist that we still need a messiah to champion the cause of building a working system. The question now is: To what extent can an individual effect a change in this current structure?

The answer is as simple as ABC! Since we are not running a dictatorial government, it will be extremely difficult in democratic environment to build a working system by individual because it can lead to human right abuses, which will only bring plagues upon the land. Our collective efforts as citizens turn towards systems creation and protection, the ruling class will be forced to do same.

Let us focus on asking for working systems.
