Marcelo announces retirement after decorated career

Marcelo, one of the greats in Brazilian football, has officially retired from the sport at the age of 36. Legendary left-back announced the news in an emotional video on social media, looking back on a career filled with major accomplishments and memorable moments.

Marcelo announces retirement after decorated career

Marcelo started out at Fluminense, where he made 40 appearances from between 2005 and 2006, before signing for Real Madrid at 18 years of age. Marcelo went on to redefine the role of the left-back over 16 seasons with the Spanish giants, making 546 appearances, scoring 38 goals and providing 83 assists. “We know Real Madrid is a special club. “It’s something you can’t describe, Madridismo,” Marcelo said, giving credit to the club for defining his life and career. He also enjoyed international soccer, earning 58 caps for the Brazilian national team and playing at two World Cups, winning among other honors a Confederations Cup and two Olympic medals.

In 2023 Marcelo returned to Fluminense to finish his career where it all started. He played 68 matches and led the team to a historic Libertadores victory.

“My history as a player stops here, but I still have a lot to give to football,” Marcelo wrote in his statement. A true legend bows out.
