Access Bank has paid tribute to its late former CEO, Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their son Chizzy, who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California exactly one year ago, on February 9, 2024. The crash, which also claimed the lives of three others, shook Nigeria’s financial sector and left a void that is still deeply felt.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the bank reflected on the impact of the loss. “Today marks one year since the world stood still for us. On this day, we lost Herbert, Doreen, and Chizi—three remarkable souls who left an indelible mark on our lives and our hearts,” the bank said.

The Legacy of Herbert Wigwe Lives On
The financial giant emphasized that while the pain of their passing remains, the legacy they left behind continues to inspire. “One year later, we still feel the void, but we also feel the weight of their legacy one that challenges us to be better, do better, and strive for greatness.”

Wigwe was widely respected as one of Nigeria’s most influential banking leaders, having transformed Access Bank into a financial powerhouse. His vision for expanding banking services across Africa was cut short by the crash, but his contributions to the industry remain undeniable.

Remembrance Service at Eko Hotel

A remembrance service is currently being held at Eko Hotel, Lagos, to honour the lives of Herbert, Chizoba, and Chizzy Wigwe. The event has drawn business leaders, colleagues, and friends who continue to mourn their untimely deaths.

The crash in the Mojave Desert was a stark reminder of how unpredictable life can be. One moment, the Wigwes were at the peak of their success, the next, they were gone. Nigeria, a country that once couldn’t stop talking about this tragic event, still feels the weight of their absence.
