Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has confirmed that the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, will proceed as planned. The governor made this statement on Friday while receiving a delegation from a civil society coalition monitoring the elections. He emphasized the readiness of both the electorate and the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct the polls. Governor Adeleke expressed confidence in OSSIEC’s preparations and stated that voters are eager to exercise their right to choose their local council chairmen and councillors. He anticipated a fair election with several political parties participating.

Legal Backing for the Elections

The governor’s assertion is supported by a recent Osun State High Court ruling. In a case brought before the court by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the court granted OSSIEC the authority to proceed with the elections, validating the process and addressing concerns about previous invalidated elections. The court order, from suit number HIL/M.19/2025, specifically addresses the vacancies created by the nullification of the October 15, 2022, elections, as confirmed by previous court decisions in FHC/CS/OS/103/2022 and CA/AK/226M/2024. The court’s decision mandates the filling of these vacancies through the scheduled February 22nd election.

The court further ordered all security agencies in the state to provide adequate security during and after the election.

Governor’s Call for Peace and Adherence to the Rule of Law

Addressing concerns and controversies surrounding the election, Governor Adeleke stressed the importance of upholding democratic norms and adhering to the rule of law. He urged all parties involved – including local and national stakeholders – to abide by legal processes and refrain from any illegal actions. He reassured the public that Osun State remains committed to peace and the democratic process. He expects the election to result in accelerated local-level development.

Conclusion

The Osun State local government elections, scheduled for February 22, 2025, are set to proceed following a court order affirming OSSIEC’s authority to conduct the polls. Governor Adeleke’s strong endorsement, coupled with the court’s decision and the security arrangements in place, indicate a determined effort to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. The outcome is expected to contribute to the development of local government areas within the state.
