Roberta Flack’s Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, Roberta Flack began her musical journey as a classical pianist. At just 15 years old, she earned a full scholarship to Howard University, where she studied classical music. While teaching during the day, Flack spent her nights accompanying opera singers on piano and singing pop standards, blending her classical training with her love for rhythm and blues.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by music all of my life,” Flack was once quoted while reflecting on her early years.

Flack’s Breakthrough From Jazz Clubs to Global Stardom

Flack’s recording career took off after she was discovered singing in a jazz club by musician Les McCann, who praised her voice for its emotional depth. However, it wasn’t until her 30s that she achieved her first major hit. Her rendition of Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” gained widespread recognition after being featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film “Play Misty for Me.”

The song earned Flack her first Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1972. She repeated the feat the following year with “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” solidifying her place in music history.

Roberta Flack’s Impact Beyond Music
Flack was not only a musical icon but also a dedicated educator and philanthropist. She founded the Roberta Flack School of Music in New York, where she inspired countless young musicians. Reverend Jesse Jackson once described her as “socially relevant and politically unafraid,” highlighting her commitment to using her platform for positive change.

In 2020, Flack was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys, a testament to her lasting influence on the music industry. “This award is a validation to me that my peers heard my thoughts and took in what I have tried to give,” she said at the time.

Roberta Flack’s Legacy And Her Impact

Roberta Flack’s music touched millions with its emotional depth and soulful delivery. As she once said, “A person with true soul is one who can take anybody’s song and transcend all the flaws, the technique, and just make you listen.”
Her legacy will live on through her timeless hits, her contributions to music education, and her unwavering commitment to social causes.
