The Ceasefire Agreement: A Fragile Truce

Hamas Rejects Israel's Proposal to Extend Ceasefire: What’s Next for Gaza?

The first phrase was designed as a stepping stone toward a second phase, which would address long-term issues such as Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and future governance arrangements. However, negotiations have stalled, with Hamas blaming Israel for failing to move forward.

Why Did Hamas Reject the Extension?

Hamas rejected isreal proposal for an extension of the first phrase, insisting that Israel is avoiding a full commitment to ending the war. The group argues that prolonging the first phase without clear steps toward a second phase serves only to delay meaningful progress. Hamas has called on the international community to pressure Israel into honoring the original terms of the ceasefire and advancing peace talks.

Israel’s Response and Diplomatic Efforts

In reaction to Hamas’s rejection, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held security consultations after an Israeli delegation returned from Cairo, where talks had failed to reach an agreement. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar have urged both parties to keep the ceasefire in place and continue negotiations, but no breakthroughs have been reported.

Global Reactions and the Humanitarian Impact

The United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have called for both sides to maintain the truce, stressing the importance of continued humanitarian aid. The ceasefire has allowed for the partial restoration of essential services, including food distribution and medical care, but uncertainty over the conflict’s future threatens these efforts.

What Happens Next?

As the ceasefire expires, tensions are rising. If no agreement is reached, the risk of renewed violence looms large. The coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomacy can prevail or if the conflict will escalate once again.
