Abia PDP Crisis Deepens: Court Restrains Enforcement of Wabara’s Suspension

The Abia State High Court sitting in Obehie, Ukwa West LGA, has issued an injunction halting the enforcement of the suspension of Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Senate President and National Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT). This adds a legal complexity to the battle between the Abia State Chapter of the PDP and the National Chairman of the BoT.

Justice L.T.C. Eruba, presiding over the case (HUK/8/2025) between Wabara and Abraham Amah, granted Wabara’s request for an order restraining Amah from claiming the Abia State PDP chairmanship and enforcing Wabara’s suspension.

The court specifically ordered that Amah is “restrained from enforcing the suspension of the claimant/applicant from the Peoples Democratic Party, or in any way affecting his position as the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP till the motion on notice is determined.”

Allegations Against Wabara

Abraham Amah, who announced Wabara’s suspension, accused the BoT chairman of anti-party activities. Amah specifically cited Wabara’s purported praise for the performance of Governor Alex Otti (of the opposition Labour Party) as a key reason for the suspension.

Denial of London Meeting Allegations

Meanwhile, controversy surrounds allegations made by former Abia State Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, who claimed that Senator Wabara met secretly with Governor Otti in London to discuss Otti’s potential defection to the PDP. The PDP Frontiers for Change and Progress, a pro-PDP group, has vehemently denied these claims through its National Coordinator, Mr. Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu, demanding evidence from Okiyi Kalu to substantiate his allegations.

Legal Ramifications

The court’s injunction introduces a significant legal dimension to the ongoing power struggle within the Abia State chapter of the PDP. The case highlights the internal divisions within the party and the escalating tensions between the state chapter and the national BoT leadership. The outcome of the “motion on notice” will be crucial in determining the future of Wabara’s position within the party.

Conclusion

The court’s intervention temporarily halts the suspension of Senator Adolphus Wabara, injecting a significant legal hurdle into the internal conflict within the Abia State PDP. The ongoing dispute, fueled by accusations of anti-party activities and unsubstantiated claims of secret meetings, substantiate reports of the deep divisions and power struggles within the party. The next phase of legal proceedings will be critical in resolving this intra-party conflict and determining the ultimate fate of Senator Wabara’s position within the PDP.
