Carl Dean, the famously private husband of country music legend Dolly Parton, passed away on Monday at the age of 82.

Dean, who was married to Parton for nearly 60 years, died in Nashville, Tennessee. Parton confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement posted on social media, expressing her deep love and gratitude for their decades-long relationship.

In her statement, Parton wrote, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.

Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.” The couple’s enduring love story began when they met outside a laundromat in Nashville in 1964, shortly after Parton arrived in the city as an 18-year-old aspiring singer.

Parton and Dean married on May 30, 1966, in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. Despite Parton’s global fame, Dean chose to remain out of the public eye, focusing on his asphalt-paving business in Nashville.

However, his influence on Parton’s music was profound. Dean famously inspired her classic hit “Jolene,” which Parton revealed was based on a bank teller who had a crush on him.

Parton shared in 2008, “She got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us.”

Throughout their marriage, Dean’s preference for privacy led to rumors that he didn’t exist—a notion Parton humorously addressed in a 1984 interview with the Associated Press. “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me,” she joked.

Dean is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, as mentioned in Parton’s statement. The couple had no children together, but their bond remained a cornerstone of Parton’s life and career.
