Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a N1.1 billion defamation lawsuit against social media commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The lawsuit alleges that VDM made false and damaging statements about Chinwo, accusing her of diverting funds and breaching her former contract with EeZee Conceptz, the record label owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu (EeZee Tee).

Mercy Chinwo’s Lawsuit Explained

On March 3, 2025, Chinwo’s legal team, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi, filed a lawsuit against VDM, demanding that he delete all defamatory statements and issue a public apology. According to the lawsuit, VDM falsely accused Chinwo of financial misconduct, implying that she had left her former record label without settling her financial obligations.

Mercy Chinwo Sues VeryDarkMan for Defamation

The lawsuit states that VDM had no direct involvement in the dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Conceptz, yet he made bold claims that damaged Chinwo’s reputation. Her legal team argues that VDM’s viral videos were libelous, misleading, and damaging to her public image.

Chinwo is seeking:

  1. N1 billion in general damages for defamation
  2. N100 million in punitive and aggravated damages
  3. N25 million for legal expenses
  4. A 10% annual interest on the judgment sum until full payment
  5. A court order compelling VDM to delete all defamatory content and issue an apology in at least two major newspapers

The Social Media Backlash

Since the lawsuit became public, social media has been buzzing with debates. While some argue that Mercy Chinwo is within her rights to protect her reputation, others feel VeryDarkMan was simply expressing his opinion.

In response to the lawsuit, VDM released another video, claiming that his statements were based on available information. He suggested that Chinwo was using her influence to pressure the legal system, implying that the case might not be fairly handled.

The case has divided Nigerian entertainment fans, with some supporting Chinwo’s decision to take legal action, while others insist that freedom of speech should allow VDM to share his views.

The Impact of Defamation on Celebrities

This lawsuit highlights the growing influence of social media commentators and the legal consequences of making unverified claims about public figures. The Nigerian entertainment industry has witnessed multiple contract disputes, and social media influencers now play a huge role in how these conflicts are perceived by the public.

While public figures like Chinwo are used to criticism, defamation laws exist to protect their reputations from false and harmful narratives. The key issue in this case is whether VDM’s statements were mere opinions or deliberate falsehoods meant to damage Chinwo’s career.

Legal Implications and What Comes Next

This case could set a legal precedent for how Nigerian courts handle social media defamation cases. If Mercy Chinwo wins, it may discourage influencers from making reckless statements without proof. However, if VeryDarkMan successfully defends himself, it could reinforce the idea that social media commentary is protected under freedom of speech.

For now, all eyes are on the courtroom battle between Mercy Chinwo and VeryDarkMan, as Nigerians watch to see who will have the last word in this highly publicized dispute.
