Davis Goffin shocks world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in Miami Open Masters Goffin, who is ranked 55th in the world, rallied past the Spaniard, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round at Hard Rock Stadium.
The 34-year-old Belgian, who defeated Alcaraz in their last encounter three years ago, took full advantage of his opponent’s problems. He lost the opening set after leading with an early break, but by that point Goffin kept his head and held his aggressive game. Alcaraz, by contrast, committed many unforced errors and looked physically sluggish in the later stages.
A former top-10 player, Goffin hit some stellar winners and held his nerve. “It’s a night I am always going to remember — against Carlos and in a stadium like that,” he said after the win. “This is a lot of confidence builder for me to keep going on.”
Alcaraz acknowledged that he was not at his best. “I didn’t play well,” he said. “I felt heavy in my legs. I was a break down in the third set, I wasn’t feeling great physically — it was really tough to pull it back.”
