Nigeria’s challenge for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was dealt another blow when they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe. The Super Eagles could not hold out for the win, however, as they conceded a last-minute equalizer despite Victor Osimhen’s late opener.
Nigeria were on top early on, with Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze having efforts on the Zimbabwean goalkeeper. Moses Simon was a persistent danger down the left but missed his chances at crucial stages. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, were lively on the break, with Walter Musona and Khama Billiat forcing Stanley Nwabali into work.
With Nigeria pressing after a goalless first half. Fullback Simon’s precise cross reached Osimhen in the 73rd minute, and the Napoli forward headed the ball into the net. But the Super Eagles lost the initiative and Zimbabwe capitalized.
Minutes from the end, substitute Tawanda Chirewa pounded through Nigeria’s backline and slipped past Nwabali for a gut-wrenching draw.
Nigeria are now fourth in Group C, six points behind the leaders following South Africa’s win over Benin. Their World Cup qualification hopes are now in grave danger, with just four games remaining.
