The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has once again rejected the recall petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District. INEC ruled that the petition does not fulfill the constitutional requirements laid out in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

This marks the second rejection of the recall petition filed against Akpoti-Uduaghan. INEC made the announcement on its official X handle on Thursday afternoon, underscoring that the petition did not meet the necessary legal criteria for initiating a recall process.

INEC Flags Petition Deficiencies

Previously, INEC rejected the Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan recall petition due to inadequacies in the documentation. However, after the petitioners added their addresses, the electoral body revisited the issue. Despite this amendment, INEC confirmed that the recall petition still does not comply with constitutional requirements.

“As outlined in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, a letter has been sent to notify the Senator of the petition’s receipt and delivered to her official address,” Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information & Voter Education Committee, had stated.

Political Implications of the Recall Attempt

The recall petition against Akpoti-Uduaghan has ignited considerable political debate. Some analysts suggest that this petition may backfire politically, especially after her warm reception in Kogi State. Rather than weakening her position, the continued efforts to recall her may push Akpoti-Uduaghan toward a more powerful political role.

Speculation is growing that these attacks might motivate Akpoti-Uduaghan to run for a higher office, possibly Kogi State’s governorship. Her tenacity and resilience against political adversaries have solidified her standing as one of the state’s most influential female leaders.

With INEC rejecting the recall petition against Natasha, it is uncertain whether Akpoti-Uduaghan’s opponents will appeal the decision or adjust their strategy. However, one thing is clear: Akpoti-Uduaghan remains unwavering, and the political situation in Kogi State is intensifying.
