Everton Hold Arsenal to Sink Gunners’ Title Hopes

Everton might have given Liverpool a leg up in the Premier League title race after they fought out a 1-1 draw home against Arsenal at Goodison Park, to extend their own winless streak to six league games.

Arsenal were rampant in the first half and it was only right that they went ahead when Leandro Trossard rounded off an instant counter by shooting past Jordan Pickford. The Gunners had several chances to extend their lead before half-time, only to be thwarted by last-ditch defending from the hosts and some sharp goalkeeping from the impressive Pickford.

Everton Hold Arsenal to Sink Gunners’ Title Hopes

Everton, who were second-best for much of the first period, were given a lifeline early in the second when Miles Lewis-Skelly fouled Jack Harrison in the penalty area. After a protracted VAR check, Iliman Ndiaye converted easily from the spot to level things for the hosts.

Mikel Arteta brought on Bukayo Saka at halftime to reboot Arsenal, but despite late pressure — and a stunning save from Pickford to keep out Gabriel Martinelli — the visitors were unable to find a winner.

The result leaves Arsenal requiring a near-miracle in the title race, while Everton’s point does little to alleviate their own problems. With Liverpool now in pole position, they could win the title sooner than we might have thought.
