Sexual Harassment, Love Triangle: What’s With These Natashas?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

They’re both beautiful, vocal, ambitious—and controversial. One fights in the Senate chambers, the other trends in entertainment circles. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Honourable Natasha Osawaru are two very different women, yet their names keep popping up in scandalous headlines. Is this coincidence, or is there something deeper going on?

Let’s break it down.

Akpoti-Uduaghan: The Senator Who Refused To Be Silent

Sexual Harassment, Love Triangle: What’s With These Natashas?

In case you missed it, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central, accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. According to her, the powerful Senate boss made sexual advances towards her in the past, and when she refused, he allegedly made life difficult for her politically.

Now, instead of the Senate investigating her claims, she got slammed with a six-month suspension. The excuse? Disrupting Senate activities.

This didn’t sit well with many Nigerians, especially women. Protests erupted. The hashtag #WeAreAllNatasha started trending. Suddenly, the issue wasn’t just about one woman—it became a symbol of how powerful men use their positions to silence women in Nigeria.

But not everyone’s buying it.

Some say Akpoti is always in one controversy or the other. From her days in the SDP to her fiery campaign under the PDP, she has built a brand around calling out corruption and fighting the status quo. Admirable? Yes. But to some, exhausting. They wonder: is she really a victim this time, or just playing the political sympathy card?

Osawaru: Lawmaker Turned Alleged Lover Girl?

Sexual Harassment, Love Triangle: What’s With These Natashas?

Meanwhile in Edo State, another Natasha—Natasha Irobosa Osawaru—is fighting her own public battle. Not in the chambers, but online.

She was recently removed as Deputy Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly after a round of leadership changes. But that’s not even the main gist.

The real scandal? Her alleged romantic ties to Afrobeats legend 2Baba.

She reportedly changed her name on Instagram to “Natasha Idibia.” Yes—Idibia, the surname of Annie Macaulay’s husband. That single action caused an internet meltdown. Some said she was clout-chasing. Others claimed 2Baba had left Annie for her. The speculations got so wild that her political career felt the heat.

Now she’s out of her leadership role, and people are connecting the dots.

But is this fair?

Did she get dropped because of her personal life—or was it just political timing? After all, male politicians have done worse and still kept their seats.

My Take: The Natasha Paradox

As Ayobami Owolabi, I’ve been observing both sides, and here’s what I think: there’s something uncanny about these two women. Both named Natasha, both young and outspoken, and both suddenly finding themselves at the centre of controversies that question their character.

In a society that still expects women to stay quiet and play it safe, these two are unapologetically bold. And when you’re bold in Nigeria—especially as a woman—scandal is always lurking.

But should we judge them the same way we judge men? How many male senators have been accused of harassment and walked free? How many entertainers have had multiple partners and still kept their careers intact?

Let’s be real: Nigeria is still very unforgiving when women dare to step outside the line.

Over To You: What’s Really Going On With These Two?

So I’m throwing the question back to you:

  • Do you believe Akpoti’s sexual harassment allegations—or do you think she’s just playing the victim card?
  • Should Natasha Osawaru’s alleged link with 2Baba cost her a political role?
  • Are we holding these women to higher standards than their male counterparts?

Drop your thoughts. Let’s gist. Let’s argue. But most importantly, let’s be honest.
