The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspect following a violent clash between rival cult groups at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Iwofe, located in the Rumulomeni area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Sources revealed that suspected members of the Vikings and Black Axe confraternities were engaged in a turf war on campus, leading to gunfire that caused panic among students.

The latest incident is said to be a continuation of a long-running rivalry dating back to 2024, when a similar clash between the groups resulted in an attack on a senior member of the Aye confraternity.

Monday’s shooting, believed to be a reprisal, led to the arrest of a suspected cultist who was reportedly found with a Beretta pistol. Security personnel at the university apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the Rumulomeni Police Division.

He was later transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit at the Rivers State Police Command headquarters.

A video from the scene, which has since gone viral, captured the moment a terrified female student screamed as an armed student pursued others across the campus.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect was in custody and that the investigation was ongoing.

Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, stated, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. One suspect is in police custody, and investigation is ongoing.

“Adequate security measures have been put in place to prevent breakdown of law and order. There is normalcy there.”
