Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been sentenced to a total of three months in prison by a Chief Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, following his conviction for assault and obstruction of lawful arrest.

The court handed down the sentence with an option of a N30,000 fine in lieu of imprisonment — N10,000 for the first count and N20,000 for the second.

Portable was arraigned for attacking a police officer and preventing his arrest during an incident that occurred in November 2022. He was taken into custody in March 2023 after footage surfaced of him assaulting a police inspector and disrupting the officers’ attempt to carry out an arrest warrant.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Olumide Awoleke told the court that the offense took place around 11:00 a.m. on November 18, 2022, at Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District.

According to the charge sheet, Portable and accomplices (still at large) were accused of conspiring to commit assault:

“That you, Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, and others now at large, on the 18th day of November 2022 at 11:00 hrs, in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit: assault, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State 2006.”

It also detailed how he assaulted a police officer, stating:
“That you, Habeeb Okikiola Olalomi, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned district, did unlawfully assault one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi (male) by beating him all over his body, thereby committing an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 351 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria 2006.”

He was also accused of theft involving studio equipment, including a Yamaha H55 monitor and an AKG P420 microphone, but the conviction focused on assault-related charges.

Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo found the artist guilty on two counts and issued the sentence accordingly, offering him the alternative of a fine instead of jail time.
