The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind Governor Abba Yusuf’s bid for a second term. This announcement was made on Thursday during the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The event, which brought together thousands of workers, was used by the union to express appreciation for what it described as the governor’s “exceptional dedication” to workers’ welfare.

Support for Abba Yusuf Linked to Workers’ Welfare in Kano

In his address, the NLC Chairman in Kano, Kabiru Inuwa, said Governor Abba Yusuf had shown genuine commitment to improving the lives of civil servants and pensioners. He praised the governor as the first in the country to approve and implement the new ₦71,000 minimum wage. According to him, “This is a bold and unprecedented move in alleviating workers’ hardship, especially in light of the rising cost of living.” This statement underlines the union’s support and the reasoning behind backing Governor Abba Yusuf for a second term.

Inuwa also highlighted the consistent payment of salaries and pensions by the current government and commended the clearance of a ₦16 billion backlog of retirement benefits left by the previous administration. The recent review of minimum monthly pensions from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 was also cited as further proof of the governor’s dedication to retired workers. “The recent upward review of the minimum monthly pension… is a testament to the governor’s deep regard for our senior citizens,” he added.

The union listed other achievements, including the recruitment of teachers, approval of staff promotions, and regular training programmes for civil servants. Inuwa said these policies have revitalized the public workforce and restored workers’ confidence in government. “These achievements are not just promises fulfilled, but a reflection of the governor’s genuine concern for the labour force,” he noted.

He concluded his speech with a rhetorical slogan in Hausa, “Allah ya maimaita” — which translates to “May the Almighty repeat the administration.” It was a clear call for continuity, strongly suggesting that Kano workers are not only satisfied but eager to see Governor Abba Yusuf re-elected.
