After a tough win over Cameron Norrie in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open on Friday, Djokovic is now one final away from a record breaking 100 ATP titles. The number one in the world came through 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-1 in a three-set battle against the Briton, which was very hard, and he was lost in the first two but recovered well and won the rest of the matches, and he is ready to the final with Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who is benefiting from this Swiss tourney to sharpen his skills before the French Open, managed to overcome his fears and unutilized chances to lead in the decider. Djokovic was in the tiebreak of the second set but he choked and lost the clutch point, Norrie took advantage of it and made it 1-1. Nevertheless, the Serb exchanged his shots fiercely and at the end was the one man in the last set, only with the loss of a game.
“It was the most difficult match for me here at the tournament,” Djokovic commented. “But really happy at how I did in the third set, it was the best set in the tournament.”
Djokovic has set eyes on being the third player in ATP history to amass 100+ titles – a club currently with Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer as the only members. He will kick off his French Open challenge by playing an opener against Mackenzie McDonald. The American player is the one to beat as the Serb looks forward to claiming his 25th major title an all-time high breakthrough.
