Napoli cemented their second Serie A title in three years by brushing aside Cagliari 2-0 on Friday, winning on the very last day of the campaign by the narrow margin of a single point against Inter. Going into the final round, Antonio Conte maintained a slender advantage, and the side had to at least equate Inter’s display to claim the Scudetto and they rendered just that.
The teams slipped into the stadium with Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay hitting for Napoli, with Inter 2-0 winners over Como. An unusual playoff would have been seen had both sides finished on equal points, but Napoli were consistent enough to see it through.
This is their fourth championship in Serie A history and constitutes an unconventional feat by Conte, his debut season. Having already been a Serie A winner with Juventus and Inter, Conte is now the first-ever manager to win the title with three different clubs.
Despite losing two stars in Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Napoli adapted very well. Lukaku reached a height of 14 goals whereas McTominay had a very fine season, with 12 goals and achieving recognition as Serie A Player of the Season. The leadership from Stanislav Lobotka and the experience of Di Lorenzo and Politano among others were also needed in this very special season of the Partenopei.
