The Tony Elumelu-led United Bank for Africa (UBA) is facing serious backlash after a United States-based Nigerian, Ibhahe Hope Ehieribo, accused the bank of illegally withdrawing ₦106,309,534.87 from his account. According to Ehieribo, the bank falsely declared him dead, processed a fake death certificate, and cleared his account without his knowledge or consent. The incident, which became public through a video shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, has left many Nigerians outraged over the bank’s handling of the matter.

UBA Allegedly Forged Death Certificate To Clear Account

Ehieribo explained that he had been saving money in his UBA account for years while residing abroad. Upon his return to Nigeria, he discovered that his entire savings had been cleared. The bank reportedly told him that the funds were transferred to two individuals, Patience and Precious, under the pretense that he was dead and had been buried. Shockingly, Ehieribo says he has no known connection to these individuals. “UBA officials claimed the money was moved to an estate account based on a court order obtained with forged documents,” the customer said.

UBA Refunded Money After Public Outrage But Remains Silent

Following intense pressure from Nigerians on social media, UBA returned the full amount to Ehieribo. However, the bank has yet to publicly explain how such a fraudulent transaction occurred under its watch. Activist Harrison Gwamnishu confirmed the refund but demanded further action. “This is not just about refunding the money. Someone forged a death certificate and got access to court documents to steal this man’s life savings,” he said. Gwamnishu has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the matter and hold those responsible accountable.

Despite returning the money to the customer, UBA remains under intense public pressure. Many Nigerians are demanding a full investigation and explanation. The fact that a customer could be declared dead, have his account cleared, and see funds handed to strangers has raised serious concerns about banking security and accountability in Nigeria. The EFCC is now being urged to probe the forgery and uncover whether bank staff were involved. For now, the Tony Elumelu-led UBA remains under fire over missing ₦106 million.
