Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, barely weeks after undergoing a discreet medical procedure, has now re-emerged to unveil three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station on Sunday. What’s making the rounds, however, isn’t just the trains it’s that he survived surgery and returned to duty without saying a word about it. Yet again, Lagos moves forward, but transparency takes the back seat.

New Trains, New Silence

Sanwo-Olu took to his verified social media handles to announce the addition of three new train sets, each with four cars, to the LRMT Blue Line. According to him, this upgrade will double passenger capacity and reduce wait times.

“Today, I unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station,” he posted. “Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line.”

This public reappearance is his first major outing since reports surfaced of a health-related procedure. Still, no official statement was made. No press release. Not even a “thank you” to the medical team. The governor just bounced back unapologetically and dropped trains.

Rail Progress Amid Questions

The governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their support in delivering the new trains. He also announced that more train sets for the LRMT Red Line would arrive before the year ends.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line which will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains,” he said. “Construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) is also progressing steadily.”

While this development would generally receive applause, the lack of clarity around his health continues to generate quiet murmurs among Lagosians. The man had surgery and survived it. That is no small deal, especially for a public figure.

Post-Surgery Public Duty

“Every hour is a critical hour,” said Senator Uribe’s wife after her husband survived a head surgery. But here in Lagos, the same level of openness didn’t happen with Sanwo-Olu. The public was left to piece things together, even as he stood proudly at a train station, hands behind his back, acting like he never left.

“We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started,” Sanwo-Olu said.

True. But it wouldn’t hurt to build a future that also includes honest governance. After all, if the Governor survived surgery, isn’t that something the public who pays the medical bills and entrusts their safety to him deserves to know?

While Lagos residents welcomed the new train sets with excitement, many are still processing the Governor’s quiet return after what sources hinted was a health-related surgery. Without addressing the concerns surrounding his medical leave, Sanwo-Olu focused on unveiling the new Blue Line trains and promising more to come. His message was clear: Lagos must keep moving, with or without personal explanations.
