The Benue State Police Command has launched an investigation into the sudden death of a 67-year-old French national, Pietier Gilles, who died on Saturday while lodging at a hotel in Gboko. Gilles, reportedly a tourist, was said to have arrived at the hotel on Friday and died the next day.

The state police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident. “Yes, a French national who lodged in a hotel in Gboko was said to have died in the hotel, and this was reported to the command on Sunday. Investigation is ongoing,” Edet stated.

Hotel declines full disclosure, questions linger

When contacted for further information, the hotel manager, Amina Cordial, said she had been out of town during the incident. “I have not been around because I traveled out of town and I am just returning to Gboko, so I don’t have details of the incident,” she said.

Although she confirmed that the hotel owner was present during the occurrence, she refused to share the owner’s contact or comment further on the death of the French tourist.

This lack of cooperation raises further questions about how the situation was handled, especially since Gilles reportedly fell ill on Saturday but allegedly refused medical attention.

Sources revealed that Pietier Gilles declined to be taken to the hospital after falling ill, though no information has been given on whether the hotel contacted emergency services or local health authorities.

With no official report from the hotel about medical attempts or response actions, the spotlight now falls on the management and their responsibility toward the guest.
