Nigerian singer Anthony Ebuka Victor, popularly known as Victony, has shared how the 2021 car accident that nearly cost him his life became the moment his parents fully embraced his decision to pursue music.

Speaking on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the ‘Soweto’ hitmaker explained that his family was initially uncertain about his artistic path, preferring he focus on his studies and build a future in engineering.

Victony Says 2021 Car Crash Made His Parents Support His Music Career

“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it,” he said.

“They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer.
“But when I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’, they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted.”

The crash, which occurred in April 2021, claimed one life and left three others injured. Victony himself was left with serious injuries and has since undergone four surgeries as part of his recovery journey.

The massive wave of online support he received at the time, he said, helped open his parents’ eyes to the reach and importance of his musical work.

Victony first rose to mainstream prominence after teaming up with Mayorkun on the chart-topping song Holy Father. He is currently signed to Mainland Block Party, a label established by Nigerian music executive Tobi Mohammed.

In a 2023 reflection, the singer described the accident as a “blessing in disguise,” acknowledging the role it played in reshaping his life and deepening his connection to his craft.
