Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemns Yelwata killings, calling the brutal murder of innocent civilians in Benue State “an act of terrorism.” Speaking during plenary, Akpabio questioned whether the violence had political undertones and warned that those responsible “will be brought to justice.”

The killings occurred in Yelwata, a community in Benue, where several residents were slaughtered in an overnight attack. Akpabio’s statement came days after the attack, prompting concern about the Senate’s delayed reaction. “I hope this is not politically motivated,” Akpabio said, visibly shaken.

Akpabio Condemns Yelwata Killings, Calls for Justice

Although Akpabio condemns Yelwata killings in strong words, critics believe the Senate’s action is too little, too late. The motion to investigate came only after public outrage and media pressure. Many Nigerians question whether any real arrests or convictions will follow.

Senator Khalid Mustapha, who sponsored the motion, also mentioned another incident: twelve travelers from Zaria, Kaduna State, were killed on their way to a wedding in Plateau State. The Senate observed a minute of silence, but observers doubt the gesture will bring any change.

Akpabio condemns Yelwata killings, but this isn’t the first time the Senate has made strong statements without strong actions. The public is tired of empty promises. The victims’ families want more than words; they want justice.

The Senate passed a resolution to launch a comprehensive investigation into the killings. It directed committees on national security, defence, and police affairs to look into the attacks and give proper recommendations.

The Senate also urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest and prosecute the killers. However, no suspects have been paraded. There have been no clear arrests, no visible investigations, and no report from the scene of the crime.

Akpabio condemns Yelwata killings, but until there is visible justice, many Nigerians will continue to treat these condemnations as empty rituals.

Akpabio Condemns Yelwata Killings, But Nigerians Want Action

Akpabio condemns Yelwata killings, again. But the bigger question remains: when will anything change? Nigerians are tired of speeches, motions, and minutes of silence. Real justice must go beyond the floor of the Senate.

Until someone is arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced, this will just be another forgotten tragedy in a long list of others. Akpabio may have condemned the Yelwata killings, but Nigerians are waiting for more than just words.
