A Florida sheriff’s deputy has been suspended after viral video footage showed him punching a driver and smashing his car window during a Jacksonville traffic stop. The incident, which occurred on February 19, has sparked outrage after William McNeil Jr., a 22-year-old Black man, posted footage of the violent arrest on Instagram, prompting an internal investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).

Despite the graphic footage, the State Attorney’s Office found no criminal misconduct by the officers involved. However, Sheriff TK Waters announced that Deputy D. Bowers has been relieved of law enforcement duties pending an administrative review into whether he violated department policies. Waters emphasized that compliance with police orders is mandatory, stating, “A person must comply with an officer’s commands, even if that person disagrees with that officer’s reasons for the stop.”

Meanwhile, Ben Crump, the high-profile civil rights attorney representing McNeil, condemned the arrest as “a disturbing reminder of historical racial violence by police against Black Americans.” The case has reignited debates over police use of force, particularly in traffic stops involving Black motorists.

Amidst Conflicting Accounts, This is What the Bodycam and Arrest Report Reveal

The JSO released bodycam footage showing McNeil refusing to exit his vehicle after being pulled over for alleged traffic violations, including not wearing a seatbelt and failing to use headlights in bad weather. McNeil, who argued it was daylight and lights were unnecessary, demanded to speak to a supervisor before locking his doors. After three minutes of warnings, the officer shattered the window and dragged him out.

The arrest report claimed McNeil was reaching toward a large knife on the floorboard, but McNeil’s Instagram video shows his hands raised as officers forcibly removed him. McNeil later pleaded guilty to resisting arrest without violence and driving with a suspended license, receiving a two-day jail sentence.

McNeil’s Injuries and Emotional Toll After Violent Arrest

In his Instagram post, McNeil revealed he suffered a chipped tooth, mouth lacerations requiring stitches, and a concussion from the arrest. “This was very hard to do. I’m not mentally healed from this, but I had to get the word out eventually,” he wrote, highlighting the emotional trauma of the incident.

Meanwhile, this case has amplified calls for police reform, with critics arguing that traffic stops should not escalate into violent confrontations.
