ICE Recruitment Drive: US Government Proposes $50,000 Bonus for New Deportation Officers

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is rolling out unprecedented incentives (including $50,000 recruitment bonuses and $60,000 student loan forgiveness) to attract “brave and heroic” Americans to join its expanded deportation force. The agency aims to double its workforce by hiring 10,000 new personnel, including deportation officers, criminal investigators, and visa adjudicators, as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

The hiring spree, funded by a $165 billion DHS budget allocation from Trump’s recent tax and spending bill, marks the largest expansion in ICE history. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem unveiled WWII-style recruitment posters featuring President Trump and the slogan “Defend the Homeland,” declaring this a “defining moment” for national security.

ICE Recruitment Drive: US Government Proposes $50,000 Bonus for New Deportation Officers
Salaries, Benefits, and Controversial Expansion Targets

New ICE deportation officers will earn $49,739 to $89,528 annually, with hefty overtime pay for field operations, enhanced retirement benefits, student debt relief up to $60,000

The push comes as Trump vows to increase deportations to 1 million annually, a steep climb from the current 150,000 removals in six months (per CBS data). With $76 billion newly allocated to ICE (a 10-fold budget increase) the agency now outpaces all other federal law enforcement in funding.

The Public’s Reaction

Former ICE Chief of Staff Jason Houser cautioned that the agency’s quality control may suffer, drawing parallels to Border Patrol’s problematic 2000s expansion: “You’ll see more officers fired within three years if they waive requirements,” he told the Associated Press.

With 20,000 current ICE staff spread across 400 offices, the hiring surge could reshape U.S. immigration policy—if applicants answer Uncle Sam’s call.
