The President of the Nigerian Senatorial Council, Ahmed Lawal has announced that the agreement made between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in 2007 was signed in error. The Senate President made this statement during a meeting with the leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and its President, Asefon Sunday Adedayo. Speaking at the National Complex, Abuja, he however cast a ray of light on the situation, saying that the senate was resolved to intercede in the ongoing crises with ASUU and the FG to bring it to a swift conclusion.

Lawal painted the crisis as a truly serious issue and added that he was aware of the negative impacts it was having on the youths of Nigeria. He pointed fingers at the 2009 agreement as to the barrier to resolution and stated that further study and research had revealed that the details contained were not realistic.

Expanding further he said that the agreement should never have been signed as there were simply no resources on hand to adequately meet the requirements written in the document. He assured the NANS group that all hands were on deck to bring FG and ASUU back to the table for negotiation as they were well aware no nation could develop sustainably without the education of its citizens. He further appealed to NANS to restrain its hotheaded members as violence and threats had never solved anything.
