Nigerian music veteran, Olamide, has revealed that running a record label comes more naturally to him than staying in the spotlight as a performing artist.

During a recent chat with YouTuber Korty EO, the rapper opened up about his transition from frontline artiste to full-fledged music executive, noting that his experience in the industry has given him valuable insight into the minds of creatives.

“It’s way much easier for me being a music executive than an artist because I’m an artist so I’ve an understanding of the needs of creatives,” Olamide shared.

He explained that having lived through the pressures and thrills of being an artist himself, he can easily relate to what other musicians go through emotionally and mentally.

“I know the way we think, I know the way we see things. I know when we are in an element. I know when we want to run mad. I know when we are getting high on our supply. I know when we are getting high on the fame, life, money and success. So, it’s easier for me to deal with creatives. I try not to bite more than I can chew,” he said.

When asked about rappers embracing other genres like Afrobeats or singing, Olamide made it clear that he doesn’t subscribe to narrow definitions of his artistry.

“You can’t box me and call me a rapper— I love music,” he declared.

Over the years, Olamide has evolved into a major force behind the scenes, mentoring new stars and steering YBNL to become one of Nigeria’s most influential music labels. Under his guidance, artists like Fireboy DML and Asake have risen to national and international acclaim.
