The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari gave the order on Wednesday, 11th may, 2022, that all members of the Federal Executive Council who had purchased nomination forms for the ongoing primaries should tender their resignation letters on or before the 16th of this month.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture disclosed the order while officiating a briefing to the State House Correspondents at the closure of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Expanding further on behalf of the President who was presiding over the meeting, he explained that though he did not have the power to speak on the fates of the other political officials who were not part of the cabinet, he could give a note of warning. Naming such persons as the Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osibanjo as one of the defaults he stressed that he found it impossible for the officials in question to adequately discharge their duties while at the same time vying for a presidential nomination.

Other officials affected by the order included the Ministers of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; State Mines and Steel, Uche Ogar; Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu; State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Women Affairs, Paulline Tallen; and Justice and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami amongst others.
