The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that KWAM 1’s airport ambassador role will not come with any payment or official privileges. Keyamo said the engagement is a form of voluntary community service, not a political appointment or salaried position.

The minister made the statement on Wednesday in a post on his X handle, saying the clarification became necessary following public debate over the decision to name Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security protocol.

Why Keyamo Says KWAM 1’s Ambassador Role Is Community Service

According to Keyamo, it is a common global practice for a repentant offender to publicly advocate against the very conduct they have renounced. He compared it to community service, emphasising that “it is for free” and “not a big position that comes with perquisites of office.”

Keyamo Clarifies KWAM 1’s Airport Ambassador Role

The minister stressed that KWAM 1’s airport ambassador role will involve promoting proper airport conduct and security awareness, following his public apology for the incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 5, 2025.

Incident That Led to KWAM 1’s Airport Ambassador Role

The appointment came after a controversial episode in which KWAM 1 stood in front of a ValueJet Airlines aircraft preparing to taxi and allegedly assaulted an airport official. Viral footage of the event drew condemnation nationwide, and he was issued an indefinite flight ban.

In his apology, KWAM 1 admitted wrongdoing and sought forgiveness from “Mr President, the Minister for Aviation, the pilot, the airline staff, passengers, and my fans across the globe.” He explained that the incident was related to a water container he carried for medical reasons, saying his doctor had recommended frequent hydration due to dehydration.

Review of Sanctions and Public Reaction

Following appeals from well-meaning individuals and KWAM 1’s expression of remorse, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reduced his flight ban to one month. His ambassador role, Keyamo insisted, is part of his penance and not a reward.

Keyamo’s Final Word on KWAM 1’s Airport Ambassador Role

Keyamo reiterated that the government’s actions were based on compassion and aimed at raising awareness about proper conduct in aviation spaces. He also announced a one-month suspension for the pilot and co-pilot involved in the ValueJet incident, with their licences now restored.

He further directed aviation agencies to hold a retreat to train staff on handling disruptive passengers and preventing similar situations. In closing, the minister made it clear: KWAM 1’s airport ambassador role is not about prestige or payment, it is about using his influence to teach others the importance of following airport rules.
