At least one person has been confirmed as deceased after a building crumbled and collapsed in the Lagos Island Area of the state, specifically Freetown road. According to eyewitness reports, the building was still under construction when it collapsed on Saturday, 21st May 2022, after a series of heavy rainfall blanketed the area. Thankfully, at least two people have been recovered from the rubble, injured and alive.

When speaking to pressmen the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Agency in a report called “Situation Report on Collapsed Four-Floor Building at No 4 Alayaki Lane, Lagos Island” confirmed that the incident had indeed occurred. He revealed that the building in question had already been found to have violated several safety protocols and had been captured and sealed by the LASBCA District Office before the accident.

According to the Secretary, the reason anyone had gotten hurt at all was that the owner had continued to make use of the building, usually at night and on the weekends. Despite the two rescued alive and the one confirmed deceased case, the Secretary stressed that it was still unknown just how many people were still trapped in the building. Search and Rescue operations would continue until it was certain that all the bodies, dead or alive had been recovered.
