The members of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS) have delivered a 48-hour ultimatum to the government of the state to release the detained President of the Bauchi State University Students’ Union Government, Gadau Branch, Comrade Aminu Harsanu Guyaba. The president was reportedly arrested by security operatives acting on the directives of the state governor because of a Facebook post the former made.

The post accused the state leader, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who is also a presidential aspirant under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of enriching himself and his family at the expense of the peoples of Bauchi state whom Guyaba said have been left in abject poverty. According to sources, he was arrested shortly after the post went viral and has been detained for the past week.

He was also forced to take down the post from Facebook before being arraigned at the Bauchi Magistrate Court without a lawyer being made available to him. The judge presiding over the case adjourned the matter to June 14 and remanded Guyaba into police custody until then.

This treatment angered many and in a statement made on Friday and signed by Ismail Haruna, NANS President, Bauchi; Dahir Sarius, President of the National Association of Nigerian Comrades (NANC) and Comrade Sanni Adamu, National President of the Association of Northern Nigerian Students (ANNS) demanded the immediate release and return of the president within 48 hours. Otherwise, they threatened, they would mobilize the thousands of their members to shut down all the major roads in the state and pass a vote of no confidence on the governor’s presidential bid.
