Why an Awkward Church Encounter Made Me Stop Attending Services - Chike

Singer Chike has opened up about the personal experiences that shaped his relationship with faith and why he no longer feels comfortable attending church.

Reflecting on an incident from several years ago, he revealed that an unexpected encounter with someone from his past made worshiping in that particular church incredibly uncomfortable.

According to him, the moment was so distracting that he could not return after his first week there.

In his words, “the chick that was leading the praise and worship, we had history. And I couldn’t… I’m like… I was having flashbacks. And she was kabashing, and I’m like… who’s that.”

Chike said the situation felt too awkward to ignore, prompting him to leave the church entirely. He stressed, however, that his decision had nothing to do with abandoning his belief in God.

“Not because I don’t believe in God, because I do,” he explained. He recalled a period early in his career, when he lived in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend, saying, “I just said a prayer. I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me.”

The singer also spoke about a confusing moment shortly after releasing his debut album, sharing how he unknowingly consumed a strong edible: “Three, four days into the release of my album, I didn’t even know where I was. You know, but that was it.”

Despite maintaining his faith, Chike admitted that the structure and expectations of church do not align with his lifestyle. “So I don’t… Church is not for me. There are things that I like, that I would not be able to do,” he said.

He added that what truly matters — whether in everyday life or in leadership — is treating people well: “You just need to do right. By the people. By the people. By the people. Not necessarily leave a certain… Look, since I’m Christian, not certainly live a Christian life …”
