Abubakar Yakubu has emerged as the new president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), narrowly defeating Rita Daniels in a tightly contested election.

The election, held on Saturday during the guild’s annual general meeting in Benin City, Edo State, saw Yakubu secure 116 votes against Daniels’ 113, with three votes declared invalid.

Yakubu, a veteran actor and experienced administrator, succeeds Emeka Rollas as president. His victory marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first AGN president from northern Nigeria since the guild’s official registration in 1998.

A graduate of Dramatic Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Yakubu brings over 25 years of experience in television, film, and stage productions to his new role. His extensive tenure in AGN leadership includes positions as national secretary (2019–2025), national vice president, national treasurer, and public relations officer.

Rita Daniels, mother of actress Regina Daniels, campaigned on a platform emphasizing member protection and empowerment. However, her candidacy sparked controversy when outgoing president Rollas suggested she should focus on family matters.

In other election results, Ifeoma Okeke was elected as the new national secretary.

The AGN has a rich history of leadership, with past presidents including Larry Williams, Emma Ogugua, Zack Orji, Ejike Asiegbu, Segun Arinze, and Ibinabo Fiberesima.

Yakubu’s election is expected to usher in a new era for the guild, with a focus on building on decades of administrative experience and fostering growth within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
