“Woke Universities Are a DISGRACE”: Trump’s $1 Billion War on Harvard Exposed

In a dramatic escalation of his crusade against elite higher education, President Donald Trump has declared he will seek $1 billion in damages from Harvard University, vowing to sever all future ties with the Ivy League institution he has spent a year attacking as a bastion of “woke” ideology.

Trump’s announcement, made in a Truth Social post, follows a protracted and bitter legal battle. In April 2025, his administration revoked approximately $2 billion in federal research grants to Harvard, freezing its funding over accusations it failed to adequately tackle antisemitism during pro-Palestinian protests—a charge the university has consistently denied.

Harvard sued, and a federal court later overturned the cuts, ruling the government had violated the university’s free speech rights. The White House pledged to appeal what it called an “egregious decision.” Until this week, negotiations were reportedly ongoing to potentially restore funding, with the government initially demanding a $200 million payment.

Now, Trump has abandoned negotiations for a stunning punitive demand. “We are now seeking One Billion Dollars in damages, and want nothing further to do, into the future, with Harvard University,” he wrote, accusing the school of “serious and heinous illegalities” without providing specifics.

A Pattern of Targeting and Punishment

Harvard is the prime target in Trump’s broader campaign against universities he deems “radical left.” In his post, he blamed Harvard for “feeding a lot of nonsense” to The New York Times, which reported the earlier settlement talks. His threats have extended beyond funding to include revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status and seizing control of its patents from federally funded research.

Why It Matters

While three other Ivies—Columbia, Penn, and Brown—struck deals with the administration to preserve funding, Harvard chose to fight in court, a defiance that has now triggered Trump’s unprecedented billion-dollar retaliation.

The move transforms a policy dispute into a potential financial crippling of America’s oldest university. Whether a legal avenue exists for such a massive claim remains unclear, but the threat itself sends a chilling message to any institution that dares to defy the president’s ideological purge of academia.
