Reform UK Pledges to Suspend Asylum System for Five Years

Reform UK has announced plans to effectively close down the UK’s asylum system for a full parliamentary term if elected, saying all new applications would be rejected and existing applications voided.

The party said no grants of humanitarian protection or refugee status would be made, while legal refugee routes and resettlement schemes would end. It would also scrap the asylum tribunal system and deport 90,000 people currently with appeal cases.

Home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf said simply: “Britain is full.”

The Plans

Reform said its existing plans to make migrants who have entered the UK illegally, overstayed a visa, or originated from a safe country ineligible for asylum would effectively prevent any current asylum claimant “from ever having their case heard.”

The party said it would therefore “suspend the asylum system entirely for a full parliamentary term.” A parliamentary term usually lasts five years unless an early general election is called.

Under further proposals, Reform said it would pull the UK out of the European Convention on Human Rights, repeal the Human Rights Act 1998, and disapply the 1951 Refugee Convention to prevent legal challenges to its plans. It would also ban British visas for countries such as Pakistan, Somalia, Eritrea, Syria, Afghanistan, and Sudan if they refuse to allow deportation flights to land

The Reaction

Labour called the proposals a “clear sign of desperation and weakness.” The Refugee Council branded them “unworkable.”

Jon Featonby, chief policy analyst at the Refugee Council, said: “Closing our asylum system would cause chaos. Desperate people would still arrive on our shores, but instead of entering an orderly system, they would be driven underground and vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.”

Labour chair Bridget Phillipson said Farage was “casting around for more and more extreme policies” as he deals with questions about finances and a rival party. She said the “right approach” is “not giving up or caving to the most extreme voices, but ensuring that the rules we have are properly enforced.”

Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the proposals “largely copy” his party’s policies. Lib Dem home affairs spokesperson Max Wilkinson said the UK “can only restore order, control and fairness by joining the EU migration and asylum pact.”

Farage’s Speech

Announcing the plans in Hythe, Kent, party leader Nigel Farage said the UK is “now living in a national security emergency.”

“We want to get back to being a normal country, a country that puts national security at the top of the agenda, a country that does everything it can to protect its citizens.”

He claimed the plans were “going to save us a fortune” but declined to say how many civil servants would be required to process the deportations. Yusuf said he would “have to embark on the biggest mass deportation programme this country has ever seen” but insisted “we will not be returning people to harm.”

The Bottom Line

Reform UK has pledged to suspend the UK’s asylum system for a full parliamentary term, rejecting all new claims and voiding existing ones. The party would scrap the asylum tribunal, deport 90,000 people with pending appeals, and pull the UK out of the ECHR. Labour called the plans desperate. The Refugee Council said they would cause chaos. Farage said the UK is living in a “national security emergency.”

My Opinion

Reform UK is not offering a solution to the asylum system. It is offering a fantasy. The party says it would suspend the entire asylum process for five years, void all pending claims, scrap the tribunal system, deport 90,000 people with appeals, pull out of the ECHR, and repeal the Human Rights Act. It would do all of this without saying how many civil servants it would need, where it would detain 28,000 people, or how it would force countries like Afghanistan and Syria to accept deportations they have already refused.

That is quite frankly a wish list. And it is built on a lie: that Britain can simply stop processing asylum claims and the problem will disappear. It will not. Desperate people will still arrive. They will not vanish because Nigel Farage says the country is full. They will go underground, work illegally, and become more vulnerable to exploitation. The Refugee Council is right. This would cause chaos, not order.

The real failure here is not Reform’s. It is the failure of the major parties to offer a credible alternative. Labour’s response is to say it will control immigration “with serious action.” The Conservatives say they would deport 750,000 people. None of them are fixing the backlog, speeding up decisions, or creating safe and legal routes. They are all competing to sound tough while the system they oversee remains broken.

Reform is not the disease. It is a symptom. When mainstream politics fails to solve a problem, someone always comes along promising to solve it by force. That is what is happening now. And the longer the other parties dither, the stronger Farage gets.
