Trump Renews Criticism of Chagos Deal

President Donald Trump has once again voiced strong opposition to Britain’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. His remarks come despite earlier signals from Washington indicating support for the arrangement.

In a blunt message posted on Truth Social, Trump declared: “DO NOT GIVE AWAY DIEGO GARCIA!”

The statement marks the latest shift in Trump’s position on the deal, which has drawn both diplomatic and security scrutiny.

What the Agreement Involves

Under the agreement reached last year, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted a plan to cede sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius. However, Diego Garcia, home to a major U.S.-UK military base, would remain under British control through a 99-year lease.

The structure of the deal was designed to preserve U.S. military operations at the base while resolving a long-standing territorial dispute.

Washington had previously given its approval, making Trump’s renewed objections particularly notable.

Diplomatic Talks in Washington

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, where defence and security issues are expected to dominate discussions.

The meeting comes at a sensitive moment, as Trump simultaneously toughens rhetoric on Iran and raises concerns about future military planning.

Although Rubio’s State Department recently reaffirmed support for the Chagos accord, Trump’s comments suggest divisions within the U.S. political landscape.

Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia has long been regarded as one of the West’s most critical overseas military installations. The base has recently supported operations in the Middle East, including missions involving Yemen’s Houthis, as well as humanitarian efforts related to Gaza.

Trump emphasised this significance, suggesting the facility could play a role in any future military action involving Iran.

Questions Over Future Military Use

Reports indicate that disagreements may extend beyond sovereignty issues. According to British media accounts, Trump’s frustration may be linked to concerns over whether Britain would approve future operations launched from Diego Garcia.

Under existing arrangements governing the joint base, Britain’s consent is required before certain military actions can proceed.

The British Ministry of Defence declined to comment on operational matters, reiterating support for diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran.

Political and Security Implications

“Do Not Give Away Diego Garcia!” Trump Warns Britain has quickly evolved from a political remark into a wider debate touching on defence cooperation, international law, and alliance management.

As diplomatic talks continue, the controversy underscores how military strategy and geopolitical agreements remain tightly intertwined, even between long-standing allies.
