Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, younger brother of King Charles, walked free from police custody following hours of questioning.

The development immediately reignited debate across the country. How did a senior member of the royal family end up under arrest, and what does his release truly mean for the investigation still hanging over him?

Prince Andrew Released After Lengthy Questioning

Prince Andrew was released on Thursday evening after spending more than ten hours in police custody. Detectives from Thames Valley Police had questioned the former prince over allegations of misconduct in public office.

Epstein Fallout: Police Release Prince Andrew

Authorities said the case centres on claims that Andrew sent confidential government documents to Jeffrey Epstein while serving as Britain’s trade envoy.

Police later confirmed that he had been “released under investigation,” meaning inquiries into the matter are ongoing.

Unprecedented Arrest of a Senior Royal

The arrest itself marked a rare moment in modern British history. Prince Andrew, once regarded as a prominent working royal, became the first senior member of the royal family to be detained in such circumstances.

His detention drew intense media attention, with photographers and television crews stationed outside the police facility in Aylsham, eastern England.

Images captured shortly after his release showed him seated in a vehicle, appearing visibly shaken.

King Charles Responds

King Charles publicly addressed the situation, expressing what he described as his “deepest concern.”

In a carefully worded statement, the monarch stressed that the authorities had the royal family’s full cooperation.

“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,” Charles said, avoiding further comment as investigations continue.

Despite the unfolding controversy, the king proceeded with official engagements in London.

Allegations Linked to Epstein Files

The renewed scrutiny follows the recent release of millions of pages of documents by the U.S. government connected to Epstein.

Those files reportedly suggested Prince Andrew had forwarded reports relating to countries including Vietnam and Singapore during his time as Special Representative for Trade and Investment.

Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein and has publicly stated that he regrets their friendship.

His office did not respond to fresh requests for comment.

Legal Context of the Investigation

Police emphasised that an arrest does not imply guilt. Under British law, misconduct in public office is treated as a serious common law offence carrying potentially severe penalties.

A conviction could result in life imprisonment, with cases heard at the Crown Court.

Officials have previously described such investigations as legally complex.

Past Controversies Resurface

The Epstein Fallout has inevitably revived memories of earlier legal battles involving Prince Andrew.

In 2022, he settled a civil lawsuit in the United States brought by Virginia Giuffre. The present investigation, however, is not related to that case or any allegation of sexual misconduct.

Giuffre’s family reacted strongly to news of the arrest, stating that the principle of equality before the law remained vital.

Political and Public Reactions

The situation has triggered widespread reaction both in Britain and abroad.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the arrest as “very sad,” suggesting it reflected poorly on the royal family.

Meanwhile, anti-monarchy campaign group Republic has continued pressing authorities to examine separate allegations.

What Prince Andrew’s Release Means

While Andrew has been freed from immediate custody, the investigation remains active, leaving unanswered questions about potential legal consequences.
