As Operation Epic Fury moves into its third day, the U.S. Department of State has taken the rare step of issuing a “Worldwide Caution” for all American citizens. The alert, released on February 28, 2026, warns that the launch of major combat operations in Iran has created a significant security risk for Americans across the globe, not just those in the Middle East.

Travel Gridlock and Airspace Closures

The most immediate impact for travelers is a massive disruption in global aviation. Periodic airspace closures across the Middle East have grounded thousands of flights. Major hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have seen unprecedented cancellations as neighboring countries scramble to protect civilian aircraft from missile fire and drone activity. The State Department advises all Americans to expect sudden delays and to monitor local embassy alerts for safe exit routes.

Shelter-in-Place Orders for Americans in Iran

For U.S. citizens currently inside Iran, the situation is even more dire. Because the United States has no diplomatic presence in the country, the government has officially advised all Americans there to shelter in place. The “Virtual Embassy Iran” warned that bombs are dropping across major cities and that the Iranian government may restrict departures. Those who can leave safely are being urged to cross land borders into Turkey or Armenia immediately, as air travel is no longer a viable option.

Increased Risk of Global Retaliation

The “Worldwide Caution” isn’t just about the combat zone. The State Department is warning of the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests globally. This is a direct response to threats from Iranian-backed groups who have vowed “unlimited revenge” for the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

What You Need to Do Now

The government is strongly urging every American abroad to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This system allows the nearest embassy to contact you directly with evacuation plans and security updates. With the situation in Tehran and Beirut changing by the hour, the State Department’s message is clear: exercise extreme caution, stay off social media in sensitive areas, and have a personal emergency plan that does not rely on government assistance.
