Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has strongly denounced a missile attack that struck a school in southern Iran during the early stages of the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Addressing the Italian Senate on Wednesday, the prime minister condemned the incident, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of several students.
“On behalf of the government, I express my firm condemnation of the massacre of girls at the school in Minab, southern Iran,” she said.
Meloni also conveyed sympathy to the families of the victims, describing them as very young, and called for a thorough investigation into the attack.
She added that she hoped “responsibility for this tragedy be swiftly ascertained”.
Iran has accused the United States and Israel of carrying out the missile strike, while the two countries have rejected the claim.
US President Donald Trump said Washington was looking into the incident.
According to Iranian media, the attack reportedly left at least 165 people dead. However, journalists from Agence France-Presse said they had not been able to reach the site to independently verify the circumstances of the strike or confirm the casualty figures.
The missile strike reportedly occurred on the first day of the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
