Veteran Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist Toun Soetan, widely known as Evangelist Shouet, has died at the age of 73.

Soetan was celebrated in Christian circles as the composer of the widely sung chorus Darling Jesus, a worship song that has been used in churches across Nigeria and beyond for many years.

Over a music ministry that lasted more than four decades, she became a prominent voice in Yoruba gospel music. Her songs were known for their strong spiritual messages and gained wide acceptance, particularly in the early 1990s when several of her worship choruses became popular during church services and revival meetings.

In addition to Darling Jesus, the late gospel minister also recorded other songs including Ke Pe Jesu and Cast Your Burdens, both of which became familiar worship songs among Christian congregations.

Beyond music, Evangelist Shouet was deeply involved in ministry work. She served as the Minister in Charge of Trinity World Evangelical Ministry, where she devoted much of her time to preaching, teaching, and mentoring younger ministers in the gospel.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, she spent part of her early years overseas before returning to the country for her education. She later attended the University of Ibadan before dedicating her life fully to evangelism and gospel music.

Throughout her career, Soetan built a reputation as a worship leader and teacher whose songs were inspired by scripture and focused on spreading the Christian message.

Many gospel singers and church leaders in Nigeria have acknowledged her influence, noting that she played a key role in shaping indigenous gospel worship in the country.

Her passing on March 13, 2026, has prompted tributes from members of the Christian community who remember her as a devoted minister whose music and teachings impacted generations of believers.
