Why I Tell Actors To Stay Neutral In Politics — Toyin Abraham

Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has revealed that her public support for Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, during the last election had consequences for her career.

The actress made the remark while speaking with fellow Nollywood star Timini Egbuson, offering advice on how to achieve success at the box office.

During the conversation, Abraham cautioned the actor about openly aligning with political figures, saying entertainers should avoid taking sides publicly.

“The first advice I will give you in my entire life is don’t put your mouth in politics. Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral,” she said.

When Timini reminded her that she had openly campaigned for Tinubu during the last election, Abraham replied, “That was then.”

Speaking further about the experience, she admitted that her political stance had an impact on her work.

“Haaaaaaa, it affected me oooo,” she exclaimed.

Her comment comes after the controversy that followed the release of her movie Ijakumo (Born-Again Stripper) in early 2024. At the time, the actress complained that the film was being circulated illegally on WhatsApp and expressed frustration over criticism linked to her political views.

“You all will tell the world why choosing my own candidate is a crime and yours is not,” she said while reacting to the backlash.

The development followed calls by some social media users to boycott her film after she openly campaigned for Tinubu during the election period.
