World No.2 Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula, the fifth American seed, eased past their opponents on Saturday to qualify for the third round of the Miami Open.
Sinner, the current Wimbledon champion, was on great form on the Florida court as he beat Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina by 6-3, 6-3. The Italian got the break in the early game of both sets and was still the boss when it came to serving; he only lost eight points in the whole match. “It’s great to win my first match here. First round matches are always tough, so in general, I’m pleased. “ Sinner remarked after the result was confirmed in 70 minutes.

The 24-year-old, who a few days ago achieved his 25th ATP title after defeating Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells, will probably play against Corentin Moutet or Tomas Machac next. Sinner is also hoping to complete the “Sunshine Double, ” a feat that has only been achieved by Roger Federer in 2017.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Pegula won when Francesca Jones, from the UK, suddenly got sick and had to retire while she was losing 6-1, 3-0. Pegula, last year’s finalist, will play against Leylah Fernandez from Canada, who needed three sets to get the better of Oksana Selekhmeteva.
