The Super Eagles of Nigeria, on Thursday, defeated the group’s opponent, Sierra Leone by 2:1 in Abuja en route to a qualifier for the 2023 African Cup of Nations to be held in Côte d’Ivoire.
First-half goals from Everton’s midfielder, Alex Iwobi, and Napoli’s striker, Victor Oshimen ensured the three-time African Champions ran away with the victory at the MKO Abiola Stadium, in Abuja.
Nigeria, who failed to qualify for the World Cup a month ago, went behind in the eleventh minutes courtesy of a goal from Sierra Leone’s striker Mosay. However, Iwobi was quick to get matters on level terms on the sixteenth after a beautiful link-up play with Ranger’s Joe Aribo and Nantes’ Moses Simon.
The Super Eagles gained momentum after the goal and kept pressing their resilient opponent hard until their effort was rewarded with a close-range goal by Napoli’s Victor Oshimen who combined well with Moses Simon in the forty-second minutes of the game.
The game saw Super Eagle’s vice-captain William Troost Ekong off with a suspected groin injury and was replaced by veteran defender Kenneth Omeruo. Oshimen, who also had a knock came off for Terem Moffi in the ninetieth minutes of the game.
The win now means Pessero’s men start their AFCON qualifiers on a bright note and are on course to qualifier for the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria, next play Sao Tome, and Principe, who lost 5:1 to Guinea-Bissau in their opening game.
