The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has set up the latest regulations for some Social Media platforms in Nigeria. They have also provided directions on how to communicate safely in the digital sphere in the country.
The NITDA has mandated the Internet-based platforms to file with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and elect a representative in the country to be interacting with the Nigerian officials.
Also, the internet-based platforms would be obeying all regulatory requirements and act following all tax obligations required for their practice under Nigerian law.
NITDA further disclosed that the Internet chatting platforms had to supply a large consent mechanism so that post prohibited content and bad behavior could be avoided on their platform.
The digital platforms would be required to give data to officials about dangerous accounts, suspicious botnets, and provocateur groups.
And other matching misinformation networks and removing any information that disregards the Nigerian law within a stipulated time.
The Information Technology joined hands to announce that the latest rules were created in conjunction with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Nonetheless, Interactive Computer Service Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, and Tik Tok also have grants.
The NITDA has warned the Internet-based platforms to immediately comply with the court orders mandating them to release data under their domain or any help to any authorized government.
