A woman who was shot and injured outside the Aurora ICE Processing Center returned to the scene Sunday, saying she will not be intimidated from continuing to speak out.
Emma Landis said she was protesting about a block away from the detention center Thursday night when a GEO Group employee allegedly shot her with his personally owned gun.
“Somebody was hurt by the words I was saying to him. That doesn’t give you the right to shoot somebody,” Landis said.
What Happened
According to Aurora police, Landis and a friend were blocking GEO Group employees from getting into work, verbally confronting them in their vehicles and taking photos before walking away.
Police said 42-year-old GEO Group employee Brandon Booth then got out of his vehicle and fired a gun in their direction, striking Landis in the foot.
Landis, who works as a server, said the injury will prevent her from working for at least six to eight weeks. “This just put a pause on my life,” she said.
Protester Returns to Scene
On Sunday, Landis returned to the Aurora ICE Processing Center, joining dozens of protesters calling for the release of detainees inside the facility.
“We need to shut this down. And the only way we do that is by keep showing up. We’ve got to keep fighting. We cannot let them intimidate us,” said Maeve, a protester at the event who was present the night of the shooting.
Arrest and Charges
Booth was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. The GEO Group told FOX31 that Booth has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.
A judge set Booth’s bond at $500,000 and ordered him to stay away from the two women involved in the case. He is expected back in court later this week.
