Jose Mourinho will be confirmed as Real Madrid’s new head coach as Florentino Perez successfully won the presidential election.
Perez has been running the Spanish club since 2009 and has been re-elected until 2030, gaining 65 percent of the votes in the club’s presidential election. His re-election automatically triggers his three-year deal with Mourinho back at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“The election confirms my commitment to keeping Real Madrid as the dominant club in European football and it’s a huge pleasure to welcome Jose Mourinho back,” stated Perez after his win.
The 63-year-old departs Benfica after guiding the Portuguese club to third position in the Primeira Liga, and it is a homecoming for Mourinho as he previously had spells with Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. Mourinho achieved many things, including the league title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup, and restored a competitive spirit at Real Madrid again, at home and on the continent.
The 63-year-old replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, who has been in charge of Real Madrid since January following Xabi Alonso’s move and this appointment is seen as the start of Real Madrid’s efforts to bring domestic and European glory back to the Bernabeu after a dismal 2025-2026 season where they failed to win a trophy.
The returning Madrid president also vowed for a blockbuster purchase from the club and made it clear they will break the club’s transfer record on a signing this summer as he sets off for his next tenure at the helm.
