Trump ally Jim Jordan is facing backlash over ICE contractor dark money. This represents a growing political scandal involving millions of taxpayer dollars and secret campaign donations.

Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio is the head of the House Judiciary Committee and a very close aide to President Donald Trump. However, a watchdog group called POGO Investigates recently found that a secret political fund linked to Jordan accepted a huge cash payment from a business that makes money by locking up immigrants.

The Hidden Cash and Legal Complaints

The company at the center of the trouble is called the Geo Group. This business runs dozens of immigration detention centers across the United States for the government.

The main facts from the investigation show that the Geo Group gave $250,000 to a political action committee tied directly to Jim Jordan. Because this money was hidden through special funds, it is called “dark money.”

Under United States law, regular companies can give money to political groups, but government contractors are strictly banned from doing so. Because the Geo Group gets its money from government contracts, a legal group has filed an official complaint with the Federal Election Commission.

This money transfer happened just eleven days after the government multiplied its budget for immigration enforcement up to $170 billion. This massive budget increase helped the Geo Group make a huge profit.

Terrible Conditions inside Private Prisons

As the Geo Group makes record profits from the administration’s crackdown on immigrants, the conditions inside their private prisons are reportedly very bad.
At one facility in New Jersey, people being held inside went on a hunger strike to protest the poor living conditions and a total lack of medical care. The state of New Jersey has even sued the company to force them to open their doors for health inspections. In another facility in Michigan, family members say that guards verbally abuse the prisoners and refuse to let relatives visit them.

Some human rights groups claim that the company keeps these prisons dirty and unsafe on purpose to scare immigrants into leaving the country voluntarily.

My Opinion

It is completely wrong for politicians to take secret cash from companies that get rich based on how many people they put in prison. When a business makes more money by keeping cells full, they have no reason to treat people with basic human dignity. Jim Jordan is supposed to be working for the regular people of Ohio, but this report shows he is actually answering to rich private prison bosses.
Taking a quarter-of-a-million dollars right after voting to give billions of taxpayer dollars to the immigration police looks like a bribe. The government should be focused on fixing the broken immigration system, not handing out massive contracts to private corporations that treat human beings like cargo just to make their stock prices go up.

A Tough Re-election Fight Ahead

This financial scandal is hitting the Ohio congressman at a very bad time. Jim Jordan is facing a big election this November, and his political rivals are already using this issue of Jim Jordan facing backlash over ICE contractor dark money to show voters that the system is broken. While Jordan’s team has refused to answer questions about the secret money, federal inspectors are now looking into the donations to see if any campaign laws were broken
